Run Far, Run Fast From The False Guru.

A thought from Michael

Many years ago, I was taking a class in Santa Monica with Bryan Kest. Something he said that day has stuck with me for years. I was paraphrasing it in my first draft of this, but fortunately I have Jacqueline Glasgow our resident walking encyclopedia to keep me straight . He said :

“never listen to your yoga instructor - always hear your yoga instructor, and the only person you should be listening to is yourself”

I think it needs to be said and should also go without saying that the vast majority of yoga teachers are not mental health professionals. To be this it requires an objective third party who fully carry’s the burden of confidentiality and fiduciary responsibility (see what I did there). I am not this objective party. I am fully invested in you, your growth, in you being you and want you to get all the things you want in life.

I don’t have a comma after my last name and even if I did what does it mean? A comma and 3 letters are pretty easy to buy online or pay a state board high fees to acquire. Post-nominal letters do not guarantee you have an objective party in your hands. The only thing I have and the amazing teachers at Yoga Lab have is life experience. We have the same thing as you. If we all have the same thing you have to pose the question why am I listen to you? The answer is you shouldn’t. Hear us as we share our life experiences. These shares are designed to evoke the ONLY meaning of the word yoga, connection. We share openly and freely from our heart not to advise you, not to give you answers. But to provoke thought, open you up to find your own answers, and as a simple means to strengthen our bond in fellowship and community. Our endeavor is to dispel the idea that we are all so different, but actually quite the same. All Lives are filled with struggles and strength with ups and downs with great success and colossal failures. We are all the same, imperfect beings with a wise advisor inside. Your intuition.

Beware of those who profess to have all the answers, be wary of those who tell you subjectively how things should be, be cautious of advice from seemingly professionals. Investigate, for these are the most dangerous ones. The only person who truly knows you, who holds all the pieces to the puzzle is you. No one person holds the answer to the perfect way of being, If the profess they do they are likely a fraud, run for the hills.

One of my most treasured possessions is a 23 year old copy of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s compiled essay’s Self Reliance. It sits on my night stand. I’m always drawn to this anecdote.

“Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore it if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world”.

This week we share experiences only to connect in fellowship and community. Not to guide and advise. You’ve already got a guide and advisor. YOU

In truth, Michael
